Harper Lee

Set in the historical deep south of America, this is a complex story about morality. Atticus Finch is a lawyer required to take on not only the public prosectution system but the long held prejudices of his small town. Through the eyes of our heroine, Scout, the challenging topics of racial prejudice and injustice are brought palpably to life.

This is the book that made me thankful I learnt to read. You cannot fail to be moved by the plight of its characters. Not only is it beautifully written, it delivers a message about an approach life - 'you cannot really know a person until you get inside their shoes and walk around a while.' Due to the sensitive nature of this book, it is recommended for readers aged fifteen and over.
