I have always been passionate about reading, (as a child I would hide under the duvet with a torch to read after lights out) and in 1999 graduated with an honours degree in English Literature and Art.  After a couple of years soul searching I decided to try and share that passion by training as a secondary English teacher. Whilst I did enjoy this experience, I felt that the curriculum could be a little restrictive and as such did not always encourage children to get the best out of literature.

In 2004 I left Secondary teaching to complete a Master’s degree in Popular Children’s Literature and at the same time transferred to teaching Primary children. I was very lucky in that the school I worked in promoted a positive relationship between children and books, which resulted in a good deal of enthusiasm (and an excellent selection of texts available in each classroom).  I would often be asked by pupils to recommend books for them.

Following the birth of my son, Fraser, at the beginning of 2008, I felt that I wanted to do more to help children find books that would appeal to them. With such a vast array of titles out there it can be a daunting task to find something suitable.  As a parent, I very much want Fraser to share my love of reading, not only does it open up the imagination, it will also help in other academic subjects, and most areas of life in general. To this end I have created ‘Fraser’s Friends.’

Fraser’s Friends is a website dedicated to providing quality reviews of children’s books by teachers, librarians, academics in the field and, most importantly, children themselves.  Who better to understand what it is that children want?

I hope that you enjoy using it as much as I have enjoyed creating it. Happy Reading!
