Roald Dahl

"I guess you think you know this story,
you don't, the real one's much more gory.
The phoney one, the one you know,
was cooked up years and years ago,
And made to sound all soft and sappy,
Just to keep the children happy."

Revolting Rhymes is the retelling of six well known fairy tales, including Cinderella and The Three Little Pigs, by the wonderful Roald Dahl. Don't be fooled, however, as you will never have heard the stories told quite like this before!

As a child I adored this book and it has equally entertained many of the children I have taught over the years. Dahl is a magnificent author and Revolting Rhymes is a testament to his genius.

The different stories are each told in verse and have very different endings to those that you will be familiar with. As ever, Dahl has a perfect understanding of what makes children laugh and uses some disgustingly satisfying language to achieve this.

I fail to see how anyone could not enjoy this book and if you are at all in doubt as to the merits of poetry, it might just change your mind!

5/5
